Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy, endorsed by most psychological and psychiatric associations around the world. It is the treatment of choice by the US military for combat trauma and the World Health Organization for refugee trauma.

In the last 20 years, evidence has accumulated for its efficacy in relational and developmental trauma. Scientists are not sure exactly how it works, however, it is suggested that it achieves its results by way of bilateral stimulation that helps the brain process traumatic memories more effectively.

EMDR Process

  • History taking and treatment planning
  • Preparation and stabilization
  • Assessment of target memories
  • Desensitization using bilateral stimulation
  • Installation of positive beliefs
  • Body scan for remaining disturbance
  • Closure and re-evaluation

Conditions Treated

EMDR is particularly effective for:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Combat trauma and military-related stress
